French Baguettes
There are few things in life as satisfying as biting into a warm, freshly baked French baguette. The crispy crust, soft interior, and irresistible aroma make it a staple in French cuisine and a favorite around the world. Luckily, you don't have to travel to France to enjoy this delicious treat - you can make it in your own kitchen with this simple baguette recipe.
Ingredients:
- 4 cups bread flour
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 3 1/3 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups lukewarm water
Instructions:
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm water.
2. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the yeast mixture. Stir until a loose, shaggy dough forms.
3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 10-15 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, until doubled in size.
5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into three equal portions. Shape each portion into a long baguette shape, about 12 inches long.
6. Place the baguettes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
7. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Before placing the baguettes in the oven, make diagonal slashes on top of them with a sharp knife.
8. Bake the baguettes for 20-25 minutes, until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
9. Let the baguettes cool on a wire rack before serving.
Enjoy your homemade French baguettes with a slather of butter, some cheese, or as the perfect addition to a charcuterie board. These baguettes are best eaten fresh, but can also be sliced and frozen for later enjoyment. Bon appétit!
